Why do I need a UPC barcode on my DVD in the first place?

The short answer is "because the retailers who will be selling your DVD for you require it." It's the way a retail sale is identified, inventory levels are tracked, and sales are credited. Even if you sell primarily at indie film festivals or out of your trunk, you should have a UPC barcode on your DVD. It conveys professionalism.

Is it true that DVD barcodes require a special ending digit?

NOT TRUE! This rumor started some years ago, and we still receive the occasional question about it. It is purely a rumor. DVD barcodes are standard UPC barcodes using a standard UPC number which has a mathematically calculated ending digit, called a check digit. This digit can come out of be anything. It's not even possible to be controlled as this rumor suggests. If you still have doubt, we can provide you with a list of recent movie DVDs that show various ending numbers, proving this rumor is completely false.

Should I use an ISBN barcode in my DVD?

No, you should not. ISBN is the International Standard Book number and is used to catalog books. It has nothing to do with DVDs. Your DVD should feature a standard UPC code - NOT an ISBN.
